My job was to carry out and complete the ‘Fitting into Society’ path, with the goal of creating a separate ending from the ‘Embrace your pigeon’ path. After discussion with the group, I would work on a path that would give 2 alternative endings. The idea was to allow the player to collect information along the way that may influence their final choices in achieving the positive outcome ending (being ‘The Big Bang’ end). In discussion we realized the story lines were not as easy to understand , however, with the use of the visual story miro map that became a non-issue. What we did notice was that a story can very easily become over complicated!
One of the first decisions made about the direction of the story was to focus on choices rather than excessive text, allowing for the player to progress through the story more naturally. This concept worked, however, I feel the next time around I would add more detail to create a greater atmosphere. This story prioritized action and choice, next time I would like to focus more on narrative to help retain players in the story longer.
Additionally, I feel the use of visual media could aid next time in creating more of an atmosphere. Especially with environments such as Dr Jives laboratory, where a mouldy textured background around the text could have given a better feel for the scene. The project was a great eye opener into the possibilities that can be achieved with interactive stories, which contrasts standard written narratives. Rather than being limited to text on a page, a reader can interact with the work. Possibly including audio could be quite effective in future works, for example the ‘Prison Job’ scene could have included water dripping or jail doors opening/closing to create a greater sense of atmosphere.
