Sketchblog 3 ( Harmonies and Choices )

I was thinking and trying to plan a bit more about interactive media. Firstly, the sound and harmonies that the player will hear. I thought back to my first post ( Music and Media ) and how it relates to the sounds I want in my game. I sat down and figured out the feeling I want the endings to convey and what sounds they would be associated with. I came up with this ( I made some audio files too ):

The Major 9th – The romantic chord, feel warm and lustful

The suspended 4th – Sound mysterious and unfinished

Power Chord ( The Perfect 5th ) – The iconic chord for punk rock, sounds bold, satisfying and feels independent.

The Devil’s chords ( The Tritone ) – The chord that classical musicians hated enough to call it demonic. It’s angry and distressing.

Octaves – The most pleasing harmonic, sound wide and feels angelic and euphoric

Secondly, the choices. I think this game will have a petal or branching structure with each choice adding a new sound to get to the ending. The ending will be one of these five. Interestingly, a lot of these chords are really close to each other, with only 1 or two notes different. This could create some overlap in the stories and opportunities to connect certain endings.

If you’ve lost your way in the IFStravaganza, you can always go back to the beginning.

Wow, this is such a cool concept! I love that you attached the audio files because your description of each chord matched perfectly with my initial reaction to them. Are these all generally agreed upon amongst musicians and taught in the theory of music?

Once again, it is a really cool idea! After hearing the audio that you choose, I’m more interested in how your story is going to be! Good luck!

This is kinda interesting and also give me some inspiration of connecting the story and music together which makes readers have a deeper experience and impression. I might add some related music into my story in the future.

I’d definitely take a look at Flower and how it works as game that incorporate music concepts into a story! There’s some playthroughs on youtube, and here’s just about the only review which kind of frustrating: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mk1-F5il_c8
