Working Through the Process

Usually, when I make notes for myself, I end up sometimes creating drafts in my notebook before I submit them. That goes for how I’ll be working through my sketchblog and interactive story project as well. Whether I’m at work, or at school I’ll end up drafting out ideas and writing as I go.
I have some sketches planned as a sort of concept art for my interactive story, but until then I have some other ideas I’d like to jot down.

I plan for Yes to meet with many characters as they journey through The Blanc: often they will have quests related to things that have happened in Yes’s past, or are reflective of Yes’s thoughts. These parts of Yes will invariably be based off of my own past. As such, I want to create an opportunity for indirect dialogue between myself and those who play my game. “What would you do?” “How would you judge me for these things?” etcetera. Because I want to allow the player to explore The Blanc at their leisure, these stories will be revealed out of order. Another thing that’s important to remember is that Yes will not be a blank-slate character. They have a past that is very much set in stone: these things have already happened, what matters now is what you do afterwards. (Though, I intend for this rule to be broken by the very end of the story.)

Within Yes’s past, there will be an NPC who only shows up in these flashback sequences called “FATHER”. This character is meant to be an oppressive figure who’s presence consumes the entire room. “MOTHER” is also a character but only mentioned in dialogue. Otherwise she is entirely off-screen if she does appear. Characters who appear in The Blanc are known as “The Lost”, and may have different names from one another. They take on rudimentary abstract forms such as that of a misshapen teddy bear, or a triangle with arms. YES is also among The Lost and they regard them as one of their own.
Many of The Lost may be based off friends of mine who I’ve known through out my life.

I’ve got quite a bit of work to go through to put this project together, but hopefully I can finish by the assigned due date.

If you’ve lost your way in the IFStravaganza, you can always go back to the beginning.

    Hi Sam!
I admire how candid and honest you are about your creative process and I think that your writing reflects that emotional aspect in a tremendously skillful way. I think that you’re an incredibly eloquent communicator, even during class discussions I always appreciate your point of view and depth of knowledge about these topics and I’m envious of how that translates so well in writing as well. Overall, I’m just really excited to see what your final product will be based on what I’ve read so far about the planning process!
    All the best,
    Tenyang
