Type of gameplay/interactivity

Originally I was planning to make a small game with an emphasis on the story using RPG maker, but over the week I have done a lot more thinking.

I really love point and click adventure games. There is something about the simplicity of the controls that I think are really comforting. It also makes it a really great genre for people who are not very games literate.

I played a free point and click adventure on steam recently called Tukoni. I loved the cozy woodland vibe. As a child I always loved stories involving small animals or people using everyday objects in unusual ways, like a tin box for a bed and such. I think I will stick with a lot of the basis of the idea I presented in my proposal but change the setting to woodland creatures.

For my art style I think I am going to try a paper-cut out look since I am not great at drawing. I also think the texture of construction paper will help add to the overall cozy vibe. This will also help the ‘animation’ process a bit easier since different pieces can be easily separated.

Here’s an example of kind of what I was thinking:

If you’ve lost your way in the IFStravaganza, you can always go back to the beginning.

That’s a really interesting idea, how are you planning on incorporating the paper cut outs into your game. Will it be a sort of stop-motion animation, or maybe something like a puppet show with continuous video?

Love the idea of a point and click game. Something about the simplicity, yet the slight intricacy of everything. I really makes the player focus on not only the art, but the gameplay too!

However, I must add onto what Sean said. How will you plan on adding in these paper cut outs? I love the style but I’m quite curious how it’ll be implemented. Is this going to be a frame by frame animation, or sort of panel/ comic book type visual style?

You and Sean have really got me thinking more about the animation rigging for these characters. I hope it turns out well!

I really look forward to playing your game, because recently I have found that most games just seem to bore me when I play alone, but point and click games are the only ones I seem to enjoy, maybe because a lot of them tend to be relaxing and they don’t require you to work at 100% all the time.

A point and click game(or point, click and drag) game that I recommend is “unpacking” and everything about this game is just amazing.

Unpacking is such a great game! Very relaxing and a great example of immersive but subtle story telling.
