Progress Update

I’m currently halfway done with the writing part of my story and so far I have not gone through any major problems. The plotline for my story is not too complex so I’m not having any difficulties writing any of the parts. One thing I do need to keep in mind though is being cautious of big blocks of text as that can be tiring to read as a player. I am a culprit for writing gigantic walls of text so I need to start breaking them apart. I think everyone would agree that reading big blocks of text is not very enjoyable, especially in a game.

On another note, I originally planned to implement my interactive story on these blog posts but lately, I’ve been playing around with Twine just to see how things work and I’m starting to lean towards using twine as my platform. I think that using the platform can add a bit more dimensionality to my story in terms of the interactive aspect. Though I’m not really sure how it’ll work out in the end since I have no clue how to code but, regardless of that, I’m hoping it’ll bring a lot more life to my story when I finish.

By the end of this week, I should hopefully be finished writing the entire story and start implementing it into Twine. I’m also debating whether I should include art to kind of boost my interactive story. I was thinking of adding doodles on the side similar to what you would see in children’s books but I’m not quite sure yet. Either way, I’m most definitely finishing writing by the end of the week and I’m hoping that things will go smoothly on Twine.

If you’ve lost your way in the IFStravaganza, you can always go back to the beginning.

I just posted on another persons sketchblog who was also talking about trying to avoid large chunks of text. I think breaking the text up and spreading it over multiple instances is a great approach as you said. Good luck with Twine! It shouldn’t be much worse than using the blog to link stories, especially if all your writing is done.

I completely understand wanting to write large chunks of text, primarily since I have never written a story like this in my previous classes where it is beneficial to have shorter text blurbs. However, while playing interactive fiction, I have noticed that I get bored when there is too much to read as well, so it is probably best to keep it short. I think your approach of spreading out the text is a really good idea though! That way you can still incorporate all your content without losing the attention of the player. Best of luck with your story!
