Dev Log #6

Another day, another dollar, instead in this case- it’s another writers block. It’s danish back on the track.

This dev log is mainly just an update to the work that I’ve done this week. It has been a hard struck writers block, I have never typed so much in my life (for context, I’ve written 56 pages of dialogue, encounters etc. as this dev log is being written. Send help). Though, progress is being made and I’m happy about that. I’ll try not to spoil too much though 😉

After quite a while- the intro of the story is finally done. You get to put in your own name and even favorite color. Just some small details that make the character you. I’m also deciding to add colored text to certain characters, to aid in the recognition. This will be later implemented in Twine.

Act I is almost finished, and will either be finished later tonight, or tomorrow morning, while progress is being made on Act II. Act I things are also super important, as it is the beginning of the game, and I want to be able to ease the player into the experience.

In addition, I’ve thought about it a lot but the first act is sort of the tutorial (and mainly the intro). This un-ironically helps with pacing of the game. I’d like players to understand the mechanics of the game before they venture further, taking the time to write in depth “tutorials” of how to use things so half way through you’re not confused or lost. Once they know what they’re doing and capable of, the game really opens up after there.

Still, as mentioned in previous dev logs, you have quite a range of choice when it comes to [INSERT TITLE OF THE GAME HERE]. You can do certain things, accomplish certain tasks, and other things that effect what text or outcome you get.

I think this gives the player a lot of agency, but just enough that they don’t get too lost. There are “limited” choices yes, but how you work around those choices is still completely up to you.

Overall, I think the intro was the hardest to write, as it needed to be good, it needed to be that good first impression, which is why I took a fair bit of time writing it and making sure I included what I wanted to. The other parts are still a little scrapy as we speak. They’ll definitely need a proof reading or two, and or the addition of more parts if needed.

Before I ended this log, I’d like to make a small thank you to my friend, whom of shall not be named, for helping greatly with the side characters. You have done an amazing job, and I cannot even fathom the creative ordeal you have going on in your head to make such fantastic characters that I adore. Thanks a lot 🙂

Next dev log coming out this Friday! See you in the next one 🙂

If you’ve lost your way in the IFStravaganza, you can always go back to the beginning.
