SB #6 Character of the player

I’ve been working on my interactive story a little, and I’ve been thinking about the player and what character they will be. Since my story is based on Peter Pan, I wanted the player to play as Wendy. Playing as Peter wouldn’t really make sense, since Peter has a very defined personality, which is vital to his role in the story. Same with Captain Hook. And since I wanted the player to feel like they are traveling from the real world to Neverland, that would disqualify any characters that lived in Neverland (the pirates, the Lost Boys, the natives, the mythical creatures, etc). But I also felt that Wendy had quite a distinct personality as well, and that players may feel inclined to act more like Wendy herself rather than choosing the options that they’d normally choose. Of course, the point of the game is to see what players would do in Wendy’s shoes, but that’s more like, “What would you do if you were in Wendy’s position?” Rather than “What would Wendy do?” I’m not sure if I’m overthinking this. But I thought that rather than Wendy, maybe the player could play as one of Wendy’s relatives, like a niece or a granddaughter. This would allow the player to be fully themselves and not be influenced by Wendy’s personality, and it’d also give me more freedom regarding the setting of the story. And rather than being a remake of “Peter Pan”, my game would be more like a sequel. I want to be faithful to the story and all its elements, but not exactly the same; I’d like my game to offer something new as well. Setting my game in the future would definitely be interesting. I also have wouldn’t have to worry about being accurate towards the place or time. To be honest, I know nothing about London, so it’d be easier for me if the setting was somewhere familiar.

If you’ve lost your way in the IFStravaganza, you can always go back to the beginning.

I think it’s a great idea to make the player character an entirely new character, because if I’m not mistaken Wendy did have a defined character arc in the original story. A new character will allow for a completely different arc that isn’t constrained by what has been written in the past. Also you could probably easily set the story in a different country by just saying that Wendy and her family moved and set the story there without much hassle.

That’s exactly what I was thinking! I could just say that Wendy’s family moved at some point, and that would be the reason that its not set in London anymore. By doing that, I could also get away with not using British lingo, because they do have quite a lot of slang, which would require a lot of research.
