Dev Log #11

Oh boy- you know what time it is. Haha- hey everybody, it’s danish here. haven’t posted in a while (aka 2 day I think?). But I’m finally done ACT I! Oh boy I’m so glad that pain is over, but now I have to do the second act…

Why did I do this to myself again? I don’t remember.. But the coding adventure must continue!

For those of you who are curious, I have included an image of the ACT I timeline taken straight from my Twine code.

Fig 11. 1. The entirety of ACT I

Yes- I have begin playing solitaire with my own code- funny enough haha :,)

Since there is a lot of code, I don’t think I can talk about everything. However, I would like to talk about a passage that I would quite interesting. It also demonstrate some of the most basic mechanics of how the game is operating. If you are really interested, you can check it out here!

BEWARE- SPOILERS AHEAD IN THE CODE. IF YOU DON’T WANT SPOILERS, JUST DON’T LOOK

OVERALL UPDATES

  • ACT I, and the introduction is finally done!
  • At the time of writing this dev log, I have gotten through half the content! That’s about 51/111 ish? I didn’t actually know that ACT I was so long :O But it makes sense, since it makes a lasting first impression, and is the hook of the story
    • Essentially- if the intro and ACT I wasn’t good- then the rest of the game wouldn’t be as good

  • Starting ACT II at the time of writing this! New NPC’s, Quests, and special main character 😉
  • New introduction to a new “mechanic” of the game. I won’t tell you much, but it involves a knife.

A new dev log will be posted where I talk about different dialogue upon returning back to an NPC. But that’s for another day- Mic drop.

See you guys in the next one :)!

If you’ve lost your way in the IFStravaganza, you can always go back to the beginning.

It’s been really interesting reading on your story development progress! It seems like you put in a lot of effort and time into creating your game 🙂

I was wondering, since there will only be a few days left before the assignment is due, will time be an issue for you to code in the other half of your project? Will there be parts you may need to scrap for the sake of time?

Hi Michelle! I’m excited for you too see the final product too! Sorry for the late reply (oops-). Hopefully I should finish in time. In terms of coding, the part that took the most time was actually learning how to code. In addition, the intro’s and act I mainly consisted of “WHAT AM I DOING” and “HOW DO I DO THIS WITHOUT BREAKING THE ENTIRE GAME-” moments. However, now that I know how Twine works- coding has been very simple (I’ve also learned I need to keep track of things!). However, I’m still learning new things, such as how to make a timed action *after* clicking on something- whichhh means I might have to go over act I to fix some more visual issues… it is what it is- but it’s been smooth sailing for the most part 🙂
