Feeling disdain for someone that can so casually say that they ‘were’ believers, I walk into the interrogation room without hesitation. I begin by quoting the well known teaching of our church.
“Thou shalt love thy wife with all thy heart, and shall cleave unto her and none else. Doctrine and Covenants 42:22” I retort. Continuing on in an authoritative manner,
“Allen, did you love your wife with all your heart?”
Bill quickly asks, “What are you doing?”
“Shh, shh” I say quickly.
Then, Allen responds with a simple “Yes”.
I continue my interrogation, “Did you kneel in the temple and make covenants together? Do you still have a Temple recommend?”Allen remains silent.
“Simple questions, Allen. They’re simple questions”.
Bill intervenes, “It’s not admissible”.
“I don’t care that it is not admissible. Thank you.” I reply sternly.
I continue, “Hands on the table”, intending to re-handcuff Allen.
Bill stands up. Our methods of solving this crime are clearly different.
“If you’ve turned your back on Heavenly Father, I’m confident that forensics will have proved your guilt, by tomorrow morning.” I conclude with confidence.
I am about to walk out of the room, when Allen speaks, “I knelt with her in the Temple. Brought her to Church with my family. You look at these as signs of innocence, but they aren’t”.
I respond quickly, “Did you break your covenant? … So she threatened to leave you, huh? Is that what happened?” After looking at him intensely I say, “I could imagine the fights. Is that why you killed her?”, I continue.
“No”, Allen responds wearily.
“Or did she turn away from the gospel too?” I say.
Allen explains, “No, it’s the opposite. Her testimony was unbreakable, the perfect Mormon girl. She came here to Utah to help build up the church, support it.” he takes a deep breath,
“Now I think I am responsible for this …”
“For what?!” I interrupt.
“Reeling her in, keeping her in it. I bet you think your testimony is bullet proof. That you know our history, the gospel, all our … truth, like the back of your hand. You don’t”.
The room is silent. Allen continues, “Let me tell you this. If you feel certain, that certain … You don’t know a thing, sir. My only regret is that I didn’t drive her out of Zion. To save her from our people. To get her as far away from all of this as I could”.
