Allen saying “we were”, is implying that they were once members of the church, but no longer are / were. Ex-Mormons are people who have disaffiliated themselves from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint (LDS / Mormon church) for one reason or another. It may be due to particular teachings, religious beliefs, or practices. Leaving the church includes much stigma, and many ex-Mormons experience difficulties from believing members. They may be seen as imoral people, lazy, prone to additions, sexually permiscuous, and all-round dangerous. As a consequence, they may even have troubles with close family members or friends. Creating rifs in their social life. It is no surprise that Allen only feels comfortable to open up about this in-front of a non-member, Bill Taba.
