After a very stressful weekend, my game is finally complete. Here it is: https://esfung.itch.io/the-one-whom-death-loves
I handed this in at 11:58 on Wednesday, just to realize the next day that I forgot to write one of the passages. Fortunately, itch.io is very forgiving, and I was able to fix it easily. Throughout the creation of this game, I learned a lot about programming, world-building and story writing. I have never written anything like this before, but I found it easy to get into. However, I found it hard to finish all the writing because of how complex it became at one point. I finished it all in the end, but there were some parts that had to be cut out due to lack of time and motivation. In the future, I would like to develop this story more and maybe turn it into a novel or a comic series.
I would say that the meaning behind the game is pretty ambiguous. I wanted this game to explore the relationship between death and love. Dying is a lonely process, but sometime living is even more lonely. I spent a lot of my teenage years contemplating death and the afterlife, so some of the ideas in the game originate from there. The most important idea for me was to create a version of Death that is absolutely pathetic. Unlike many of the versions of Death in other types of media, my character has no power over who dies. They only collect souls and bring them to a certain place, where the soul can choose where to go next. Death here is more of a delivery person than a god, and they are pretty awkward around other characters. Hopefully, this version of Death will show people that dying isn’t so scary, or at least get them to think about the afterlife a little bit. In the end, this story is for everyone who has thought about dying a bit too much and a bit too young. You are just one of Death’s beloved.
