Interactive Story Brainstorm

This is just some general brainstorming of two of my ideas that I would like to do my interactive story on. There’s no particular reason why I want to do those types of games. They just pique my interest and writing a story for these games sounds fun. Currently, I’m leaning towards making my interactive story script-based because I personally thought that creating the IFStravaganza stories was really enjoyable and it’s quite simple to do. There are limitations to the blog posts for an interactive story but I think it’ll be a fun challenge to work around.

If you’ve lost your way in the IFStravaganza, you can always go back to the beginning.

The Dating Simulation sounds very interesting. I have a couple of questions for you, and would love to hear your thoughts. How will you implement the narrative and the interactive portion of your project? Would the player be able to choose from a variety of characters, and how would they interact? Are there any other platforms that you would like to explore?

Well, from what I’ve seen of dating sims (playing myself or watching people’s play-throughs), most of the interactivity would be through dialogue/ action choices. So it would be like having a conversation with the characters and it’ll feel like you’re actually interacting with them. For example, in Mystic Messenger (you can check it out in a mobile app store), the whole concept of the game is chatting to the characters through texting and based on what text you choose, it’ll choose a route for a certain character and you get a chance to get an ending with that character. Most of the interactive portion of the game is choosing dialogue bubbles that they give you and each option is catered to one of the characters.

I think it’ll take the fun out of dating sims if there wasn’t a selection of characters so if I do decide to go with my dating sim idea, I’ll definitely create multiple characters. Going back to my Mystic messenger example, all of the characters were friends with one another and all talked in one group chat and you get to witness all of their conversations. You get to see how they interact with each other one on one and basically watch their friendship unfold (with you in it of course). And sometimes, you get to see the characters try to fight for you and how they want you to like them (depending on your answers/choices). I think that ties into how interaction plays into the narrative.

Lastly, it’ll be really cool if I could make a story with other platforms/programs other than these blogs; however, for this project, I think it’ll be too much brain power for me to figure out how to work programs that I’ve never heard of before escpecially when there is a time limit. There’s a bit of a learning curve for coding and such and I don’t think I have the capacity for that in a short amount of time for this project. So I’ll be sticking with what I know and try to make my best out of it.

I hope my answers aren’t too boring. Thanks for commenting, Madeleine!
