I made my way below deck and gathered whatever supplies I could into my satchel. Then I began hurriedly sliding all the gunpowder barrels together before unravelling the longest bundle of fuse I could gather, backing towards the stairs to the top deck. I heard something fall somewhere down the corridor, followed by what sounded like cooing. I froze, but only for a moment. I had no intention of staying on this cursed ship any longer. I lit the fuse and quickly, but quietly, made my way back to the top deck. As I got closer I heard the cabin boy yelling.
“How could you?! He was our captain. I was your job to close the hatch! Why would you prevent it from closing with this?” As my eyes breached the top deck I saw the boy throw the cook’s knife to the ground. The cook began to laugh.
“I knew you wouldn’t understand. This sacred creature requires sacrifice. Perhaps it will accept an offering already dead.” I watched in horror as the cook reached for his hip, and pulled a musket from his belt.
“No, STOP!” I yelled. But it was too late. He had already shot the boy, and his body collapsed to the ground.
I stood there in shock. The cook walked over to the lifeboat and loosed the ropes, letting our only means of escape down into the water to drift away. When he turned back to face me, he was smiling.
