SB #9 Using hooks in Twine

I love hooks. They’re fun, and a great way to add interactivity without having to branch. Here are some of my favorite passages in my story:

The click hook helps build the feeling of tediousness when getting nagged by parents, especially one after the other. Even though it’s just clicking, well, clicking is a lot more work than reading with your eyes.

Click (and mouseover) hooks are also a great way to lead the eyes of the player to wherever you want. It gives players a smoother reading experience.

Here I’ve combined a mouseover hook with a mouseover sound effect (literally two birds with one stone). The sound effect is a bit delayed, which I actually like. It got timed perfectly.

Disney should hire me, look at my poetry skills (just kidding haha). I really like breaking the fourth wall though. It may break the player’s immersion, but I think it’s fun, and maybe it’s good to break the immersion sometimes. Barrie did it a lot in his novel, Peter and Wendy and I felt like those moments were super fun.

If you’ve lost your way in the IFStravaganza, you can always go back to the beginning.
